Turn-based StrategyMicroprosePC1996

Epic single-player turn-based strategy game challenging your ability to develop an entire, globe-spanning civilisation. Beginning with a few settlers in an unexplored isometric world in 4000BC, you must explore and begin building cities to create the most powerful civilisation over 6000 years. Cities are micro-managed, allowing you to directly control their productivity and construct amenities for the citizens, or even oversee creation of a wonder of the world. As well as units for exploration and expansion, military units must also be constructed to launch attacks on enemy cities and to defend your own. The research tree ranges from the likes of theology and mathematics to space travel and nuclear power. Diplomacy can also be employed with your neighbours, trading knowledge and resources to help keep borders peaceful. The game can be won by either successfully launching a space ship to Alpha Centauri or by grinding your opponents into the ground in all-out military conquest.

"More Civ than ever," and a true continuation of the Sid Meier lineage. The year is 4000BC. An ancient tribe has finally decided to work together and settle down somewhere, and they have given total leadership control to you. You have over 6,000 years in which to exert your will, exploring your isometric world and founding a world-dominating civilisation. You aren't the only tribe out to take over the world, and a combination of scientific discovery, diplomatic negotiations and military force are necessary to succeed. The major improvement over previous Civs is the addition of culture, a field around each city whose size depends on its artistic and religious development. As well as forming natural borders for your civilisation, this allows you to take over cities without resorting to violence. Also new is the management of resource squares, with luxuries (such as furs) and strategic goods (such as iron) needing to be linked to cities in order to be used for happiness or construction.

In 1899, the young members of the Covenant family invoke a dark magic at the mysterious Standing Stones. Later, one by one, they succumb to the family curse of madness and, one by one, they die. As the last lies on his deathbed, he sends for his old friend and paranormal investigator Patrick Galloway. Only he can solve the mystery of the Stones and even the Covenant curse itself.

Patrick must explore the 3D Covenant estate, taking in the monastery, the cottage, and the onimous mansion itself in the course of his inestigations. Working on the clues given by servants and the journals of the siblings, he fights his way through the realm and puts the undead spirits of the Covenants to rest. Fear is put to good use, as wind billows curtains and the scratchings of monsters can be heard on the floorboards. When the inevitable confrontation happens, Patrick can retaliate with a two-handed attack system, one weapon and one magic spell.

The CPC chess game, and is very intelligent even on such a machine. The AI plays a tough game, and has a few advanced features. You can see what it is thinking, how it may act, and how it reckons you may react. You can also replay whole matches to see where you went wrong. With a nice 2D or pseudo-3D board, and an uncluttered display, the only downfall is due to the lack of a mouse.

Albert Einstein has developed a new technology, the Chronosphere, that can transport matter through space or time. He used it to send himself back in time in order to assassinate Hitler before the second world war. However, this led to the rise in power of Stalin, who initiated a new World War II by launching an attack on Europe. The Europeans quickly rallied together as the Allied Forces in an effort to stop the Soviet onslaught. Now the world is at war, with Einstein advancing Chronosphere technology for the Allies and the Soviets experimenting with nuclear weaponry.

Red Alert is a new chapter in the Command & Conquer series, pitting the Allies against the Soviets in an altered World War II. As is traditional in the C&C series, there are two single-player campaigns, one for each side, which see you leading an assault and slowly reclaiming the map for your chosen side. Battles are viewed from an almost overhead perspective, with each side constructing bases and training armies in real time. Ore must be refined to spend on buildings, infantry and war machines, ranging from attack dogs to armored rocket launchers, MiG aircraft, and battle cruisers. Each side has its own distinct collection of units and structures, with the Soviets tending toward armour and brute force while the Allies favour speed and subterfuge. The sides are delicately balanced, and every unit has its counterpart, every attack an appropriate defense.

In the original Red Alert, Albert Einstein's plan to stop World War II had backfired and led to Stalin leading an attack on Europe. The Allied forces won out, and Stalin was defeated. Alexi Romanov, follower of Allied ideals, took control of the Soviet Union and set about peace and prosperity. However, he harboured a secret hatred for the Allies for their destruction of his country. Covert research has resulted in the Soviets gaining an advanced nuclear armoury and even the ability to control minds. With the mysterious Yuri by his side he has launched a surprise attack on the United States, destroying those who resist the psychic conditioning.

Sequel to the successful C&C:Red Alert, Red Alert 2 gives you the choice of playing through campaigns as either the Allied or Soviet forces. Each mission is viewed from an isometric viewpoint and played out in real time. Most missions require you to construct a base with supply structures like the ore refinery and power plants, defensive turrets, and radar and research systems. Land, sea and air forces can be built at their respective structures, and then these armies commanded to attack the enemy. Advanced buldings allow you to control the weather and summon lightning storms, render objects invulnerable, or even launch nuclear attacks.
