| Arcade Platformer | Ocean | CPC | 1989 |
Bub and Bob appear in human form in this classic arcade platformer. They must fight their way to the top of a series of colourful islands, which are structured more like towers. To help them, they can produce rainbows, which can be used as eiter platforms or as a weapon when broken above the enemies' heads. Bonuses and powerups are strewn about, which is fortunate as the islands are slowly sinking into the sea and so they need all the help they can get.

| Dungeon Adventure | Hewson | CPC | 1987 |
Forgive me for expressing opinion here, but I love this game. You play the part of a wizard who was rather unfortunately turned himself into a frog. His only hope is to conquer eight dungeons and destroy all of the warlocks on each of their eight levels. Play is viewed from overhead, with new rooms appearing on the map as you explore them. He has four magic characteristics: Life force, attack power, defensive power, and an effect spell. These magics can be upgraded by casting runes which can be collected from defeated warlocks. Fighting a warlock consists of rearranging the letters of "ranarama" within a tight time limit.

| Light cycle | Mastertronic | CPC | 1990 |
Speed. That's what it's all about. This version of the infamous Tron light cycle sequence is the fastest I've seen on the CPC. Two combatants, red and blue, face off in a large square arena and must cause the other to crash into the trails left behind their bikes. Each rider has the ability to drill through a trail three times per round, which can be used to get out of a tight situation if your reactions are quick enough. The first to win 9 rounds is declared the victor.

![]() | There have been mysterious deaths and rumours of monsters in the surroundings of one of Umbrella's research laboratories, and STARS have been sent in to investigate. Not all goes to plan, and Bravo team disappears, leaving only Chris, Jill, and the rest of Alpha team. As they search the old mansion concealing the lab, it becomes clear that the rumours were far from the work of imagination. A strange virus has broken loose, and now the halls are stalked by the undead remains of the unfortunate victims. Giving you a choice of either Chris or Jill, each with slightly different games, you must find out what's going on and bring about an end to it all. Oh, and escaping would be a good thing, too. Your 3D model explores the pre-rendered views of the estate, running into rabid dogs, enormous spiders, and of course, lots of zombies. Machine guns, flamethrowers and (for the crazy) knives can be used to put a stop to their brain hunger, enabling you to go about the object-based puzzle solving without exsanguinating too much.

![]() | The sequel to Resident Evil. The omnipresent Umbrella Corporation's genetic research and bio-weapon development continues in Raccoon City, even after most of the population have been turned into zombies. A new and more powerful version of the zombie virus has been developed, one which can turn humans into snarling mutants. Enter the new police recruit Leon, and Claire, sister of the original's Chris. New arrivals to the City, they wonder just why the place is so deserted... Taking control of either one, your missions are to escape from the desolate city and to destory the new virus. Each character has their own storylines and objectives, depending on the order in which you play them. Your journey through the police station and the city is viewed from fixed camera angles, with 3D models overlayed on pre-rendered backgrounds. When not carrying objects back and forth to solve puzzles, the undead will be sneaking up on you and crashing through windows, hopefully into the line of fire of one of your many weapons.

![]() | Raccoon City is in ruins. Recently, Umbrella Corporation's genetic experiments in the mansion lab went awry and created a race of undead mutants. Jill Valentine was sent in with STARS to investigate. Many died. Now, having resigned from the group, Jill simply has to get out of the city. Umbrella's virus, however, has created something much stronger than she has encountered before, and the super-mutant Nemesis also roams the streets. Another day, another Resident Evil. The basic formula of the game hasn't changed: Pre-rendered backdrops of creepy mansions and demolished streets, hordes of 3D zombies and mutants, object-based puzzles (use crank on hole to open door, etc.) and not quite a big enough arsenal. Your choice of character is limited to Jill, but she will occasionally meet other humans which certain sequences will require you to play as. She will also meet the titular Nemesis, a tough-as-undead-nails mutant with a thing for STARS members, on numerous occasions as she wanders through the city.

![]() ![]() | Return, if you will, to the second in the Resi series. Claire Redfield uncovers the genetic experiments undertaken by the Umbrella Corporation, that turned the people of Raccoon City into bloodthirsty zombies. After escaping with her life, this is the continuation of her story. Hunted by Umbrella's black ops, she is eventually captured and imprisoned on a remote island. There she meets fellow inmate Steve Burnside, and the manic aristocrat who watches over the compound. Naturally, she also meets more victims of the virus and begins another fight for survival. And so as Claire, or on occasion a comrade, it is up to you to find your way off the island and put a few rounds of lead in any monster that gets in your way. Backtracking between locations to solve item-based puzzles (not least of which is conservation of ammo) is as usual the name of the game, and the prison and mansion complexes allow for some genuinely creepy environments in one of the largest games of the series. New to the series is a fully 3D environment; the "fixed" camera angles now sway and pan over the action, and the new style means scenes can be kitted out with the likes of squeaky ceiling fans and swinging lamps.

| Survival horror | Capcom | DS | 2006 |
The original Resident Evil ported to the handheld DS, with all the graphical subtleties and skilled voice acting of the PlayStation classic. Oh, and a conveniently chosen subtitle. Few changes have been made to the core game, save for the stripping of the introductory FMV. Rebirth Mode, new to the handheld, adds a fresh bucket of zombies and rearranges puzzles to include DS-based activities such as blowing away poison gas. Also, on entering a room, you may have to fend off zombie hordes in a first person stylus slasher.

Three challenges face the intrepid roadie Rik, as he races against the clock to set up a concert. First off he must reach the venue in the infamous purple van, dodging traffic. Then comes some joystick-waggling to haul the equipment out, and finally it must all be tested while keeping an eye on the meters to make sure he doesn't blow any fuses.

Roland the flea-thing has managed to get himself stuck in a prehistoric cave infested with man-eating plants and a very annoying pterodactyl that constantly homes in on his position. His mission: to make it out of the hole in the top of the side-viewed cavern. The problem: he can only move by leaping left or right, the strength of which is determined by how long you hold the key down for.
