Final Fantasy IX marks a return to the roots of the series, discarding some of the ideas experimented with in FFVIII but keeping enough new thoughts to make it interesting. Central to the plot are the princess, and Zidane Tribal of Tantalus. Agreeing to smuggle her out of Alexandria moments before war breaks out, they begin a quest to restore order to the nation and to find out just who is responsible for the devastation. Now black mages are running rife through the land, cities are crumbling beneath their power, and the Queen of Alexandria will stop at nothing to retrieve her daughter.

In classic FF style, it's all chocobos, moogles, equipment and MP in a "fantasy" setting. Player characters are of a fixed class and can only learn certain abilities, and even the elemental shrines from FF1 make a comeback. Some of the more modern aspects are also included to make a fine blend of old and new; characters can charge up a desperation attack bar (called Trance), you can train a chocobo, and between battles you can indulge in a game of cards with the NPCs you meet. And of course, it's all done in shiny pseudo-3D with lots of special effects.
