The world of Final Fantasy IX is watched over by a pantheon of god-like beings known as Eidolons. The ancient summoner tribe developed ways of harnessing their power and focusing it in magical gems. The last remaining descendants of the summoner tribe, Eiko and Dagger, are therefore the only two player characters with the with the ability to call upon these Eidolons. In addition, each Eidolon can only be called by one of them, with Dagger's taking the offensive and Eiko's being more geared toward support.
New summons cen be learned just like other abilities, by equipping the appropriate gemstone as an accessory and pumping AP into it.
Eidolons have two versions of their summon animation, one full length and the other abbreviated to speed up battles. The short versions, however, are only half as effective as the full. Which one you get is randomly decided, but your chances can be improved by activating the Boost ability. The Eidolons' strengths are also tied to their gemstones, and they will be more powerful the more stones you have in your inventory.
