Carbuncle
Do not be fooled by Carby's cute looks and tendency to be called Carby. He frequently shows himself to be one of the most useful summons in the party's arsenal, though he never actually hurts anything. Instead, calling upon his help casts Reflect on each party member at once, granting near total protection from magic for a defensive position. In addition, his spell can be changed to either Vanish, Haste, or Shell by equipping certain gemstones.

Ruby (35AP to learn)
Eiko finds her Ruby at the Iifa Tree just after breaking the seal. As Carbuncle uses status effects rather than magical attack power, just one gemstone is sufficient.
Note
The attack is determined by which gemstone Eiko has equipped. If no appropriate stone is equipped, Ruby Light will be cast. Pearl Light is caused by equipping a Moonstone.
Attack
Ruby/Emerald/Diamond/Pearl Light (24MP)
Casts Reflect (Ruby), Haste (Emerald), Vanish (Diamond), Shell (Pearl/Moonstone) on all party members.
Out of a rainbow-coloured hole in the ground pops Carbuncle. It lowers and hovers in front of the party for a moment. After a pause, the gemstone in its forehead grows and a bright light is emitted from the end, and the party gains the appropriate status.
