Staves
Vivi is best suited to taking a more distant approach to combat, leaving the brawling to the likes of Zidane while standing back and showering the enemy with magic. So while he can attack with his staff, and he even carries some Add ST skills, the primary use of these weapons is to teach their wonderful abilities.
| Name | Status |
|---|---|
Mage Staff | Staff used by black mages. |
| Attack: 12 | |
| No special status | |
Fire: 25 | |
![]()
| |
Vivi's initial equipment which, along with certain armours, teach the basic elemental magics. It will be quite some time before another staff will become available, so get used to it. | |
| Flame Staff | Staff with a divine fire power dwelling inside. |
| Attack: 16 | |
| Elem-Atk: Fire | |
Fira: 50
Sleep: 20 | |
![]()
| |
Second-level magic of the fire persuasion, with the extra ability to cast Sleep in order to protect the mage while casting. The Flame Staff may be stolen from the third Black Waltz, and should be done so in order to replace the ailing Mage Staff. | |
| Ice Staff | Staff with a divine ice power dwelling inside. |
| Attack: 16 | |
| Elem-Atk: Ice | |
Blizzara: 50
Slow: 20 | |
![]()
| |
This second-level ice staff comes with very useful extra status magic to disable the enemy party. If you can survive Master Gizamaluke's attacks long enough to steal from him, you can obtain this staff on the first disc and finally teach Vivi some real magic in time for Burmecia. | |
| Lightning Staff | Staff with a divine thunder power dwelling inside. |
| Attack: 16 | |
| Elem-Atk: Thunder | |
Thundara: 50
Poison: 35 | |
![]()
| |
The third of the elemental trio is also available from Black Waltz 3. Of particular note is Poison, which can help eat away at tough opponents' HP. | |
| Oak Staff | Staff made from a legendary tree. |
| Attack: 23 | |
| Add ST: Slow | |
Stop: 25
Bio: 40
Drain: 60 | |
![]()
| |
A notable chunk of wood with some deliciously powerful spells, including the Poison upgrade Bio. With a little effort and some help from a Reef chocobo, it's possible to obtain this staff before reaching Burmecia. Now that's not bad. | |
| Cypress Pile | Weapon that radiates a mysterious light. |
| Attack: 27 | |
| Add ST: Confuse | |
Demi: 30
Break: 30
Comet: 55 | |
![]()
| |
Comet alone makes this staff worthy of note, backed up by a duo of spells which may come in handy against the right opponents. | |
| Octagon Rod | Staff with a water god dwelling inside. |
| Attack: 29 | |
| Absorb: Water, Wind Add ST: Trouble Raises Water Elem-Atk | |
Firaga: 75
Blizzaga: 85
Thundaga: 80 | |
![]()
| |
Water and Wind are rare elements, but defence against them can make all the difference in the right situation. It's worth trading down to this weapon after learning more powerful spells just for this protection. In addition, of course, this fine staff completes Vivi's selection of elemental magic with the three third-tier spells. | |
| High Mage Staff | Staff that holds powerful magic. |
| Attack: 32 | |
| Add ST: Silence | |
Meteor: 95
Osmose: 70 | |
![]()
| |
Meteor is the second most powerful black magic there is, and thus is an essential acquisition. With all that black magic going on, Osmose also comes in handy to stock up on the MP to fuel another spell assault. | |
| Mace of Zeus | Legendary staff that once belonged to a grand magician. |
| Attack: 35 | |
| Add ST: Mini | |
Doomsday: 150 | |
![]()
| |
The ultimate staff with the ultimate black magic, the Mace of Zeus is obviously something to cherish. Obtaining it is another matter as it doesn't appear until the final leg of the adventure. Whether you'll ever actually use Doomsday is debatable, but you really owe it to Vivi to teach it to him. | |
