Abilities
Freeze

Cost: 82MP

Freeze is an extremely powerful Ice-elemental attack, more so than Ice3. It has a backup weapon in case the target survives: It has a chance of inflicting Paralyze.

Break

Cost: 86MP

Break becomes available once the materia reaches its second level. It is an Earth-based attack with the chance of inflicting Petrify on the unfortunate victim.

Tornado

Cost: 90MP

Tornado is added to the materia's magic list at its third level. It's of Wind element, and so is preferable to Break against aerial beasties. It carries the Confusion status ailment, which it may deal in addition to its damage.

Flare

Cost: 100MP

Flare is Contain's final spell, gained at level 4. Unlike its predecessors, it has no associated status ailment. It instead relies on extreme Fire-based damage to fry its target.

Combo tactics

Contain materia is non-elemental, and so doesn't benefit from Elemental linkage. However, it does carry the status ailments Paralyze, Petrify, and Confusion, and is therefore good to link with Added Effect. It is otherwise fairly standard magic, and so can be paired up with most support materia. It cannot be linked with All.

Mideel. Find the little white chocobo and befriend it by giving it some Mimett greens. Scratch behind its ears and it will cough up the Contain materia.
