Eternal Legend - Final Fantasy VIII - Limit Breaks
Final Fantasy VIII Limit Breaks

Combine

Rinoa has two different limit breaks, the first of which involves her dog, Angelo. On entering desperation mode, Rinoa is able to summon her faithful hound to her assistance with the Angelo command. Exactly what Angelo does is up to him, although the more powerful abilities will be selected in crisis situations. In addition to summoning, Angelo may sometimes make an unscheduled appearance in the middle of battle. This is often in response to Rinoa taking damage, although it may simply occur at random.

Rinoa's status screen

Rinoa may learn new commands by reading Pet Pals magazines, and she passeses these skills on to Angelo by walking around in the field. Rinoa's Status menu lists her known skills in the form of red bars; walking around slowly fills the currently selected bar, until the trick is learned. A new trick is not automatically selected, and the only clue to having learned something is a sound effect similar to SeeD payday, so it is important to keep an eye on Rinoa whenever she is in the group. Tricks may be learned by walking round safe areas, or while using Enc-None, so completing the list is simply a matter of time.

Rinoa's second limit break, Angel Wing, becomes available after the visit to the Lunar Base, although she maintains the ability to summon Angelo. Angel Wing causes Rinoa to go into a magical form of Berserk, greatly increasing her casting power and causing her to attack of her own accord. Only death or petrification (or the end of battle) will interrupt her tirade of spells. She may cast any spell, be it offensive or defensive, or even repeated Scans, but she will choose appropriate targets. Most usefully, the spells do not come from her stock. She also gains immunity to many status ailments which would otherwise hinder her abilities, with the exception of Petrification and Death.

Angelo (Automatic)

If Angelo knows any of the following skills, he may use them in battle. Rinoa must be alive and able to act in order for Angelo to appear. He appears with greater frequency when nothing is happening, so holding off on the commands for a while may encourage him to visit.

1Angelo Rush
MagazineN/A
TargetOne enemy

A relatively weak charge attack on an enemy, made better by the fact that it doesn't use up Rinoa's turn. This is not an uncommon response to his master taking damage.

2Angelo Recover
MagazinePet Pals Vol. 2
TargetOne ally

If things are looking tough, and either Rinoa or one of her allies is low on HP, Angelo may appear and ferret around in the ground for a free healing item. He uses it automatically on whoever needs it, then runs back to the safety of the sidelines.

3Angelo Reverse
MagazinePet Pals Vol. 4
TargetOne ally

An alternative to Angelo Recover for when an ally is fallen, or sometimes in immediate response to Rinoa being KOed. The free Phoenix Down he finds and uses restores the character to life, but with only a little HP.

4Angelo Search
MagazinePet Pals Vol. 5
TargetN/A

An uncommon trick, often only seen during prolonged battles in which the party remain in good health. For the familiar reward of a biscuit, Angelo interrupts the battle to dig around in the field, passing on to Rinoa whatever item he finds. There are many possible discoveries, both common and rare, but GF-based items are a regular theme.

Angelo (Combine)

The following skills may be the result of summoning Angelo in battle:

1Angelo Cannon
MagazineN/A
TargetAll enemies

Probably the least likely weapon ever conceived, Angelo Cannon is nonetheless effective as a way to clear out multiple opponents. By leaping up onto Rinoa's arm and settling himself on her pinwheel, Angelo can be launched at the enemy party as an exploding missile of death. For this, he receives a biscuit.

2Angelo Strike
MagazinePet Pals Vol. 1
TargetOne enemy

Angelo Strike is a more ferocious attack for higher damage, but only against the one randomly-selected foe. No matter how tough they are, Angelo is more than a match, lifting them clear into the air and slamming them down in a grand piledriver.

3Invincible Moon
MagazinePet Pals Vol. 3
TargetAll allies

The simple joys of a dog biscuit are all it takes to convince Angelo to harness the power of the moon, in a tribute to Red XIII, resulting in limited invulnerability for the entire party. While invulnerable, party members will be semitransparent and immune to everything but restorative magic.

4Wishing Star
MagazinePet Pals Vol. 6
TargetAll enemies, multiple hits

A killer move in which Rinoa rides Angeloback as he tears through the enemy party multiple times, leaving shooting star-style trails of light in their wake. Under the right circumstances, this can result in ten or more powerful hits.
