When Zell is assigned to work with Seifer and Squall for the SeeD exam, there is despair all round. His lively, barely-contained personality clashes with the restrained stoicism of his comrades, though this often ironically leaves him as the lone voice of reason.
Zell's upbeat style extends beyond that of beating people up. His impulsive nature has earned him a reputation around Garden as a minor troublemaker and general loudmouth, and as such is an easy target for the likes of Seifer and the disciplinary committee. In the rare moments he does stop to think, however, he will generally try to abide by appropriate codes of conduct.
In battle, Zell's martial arts training make him deadly in unarmed combat, preferring the up-close and personal touch over magic. When critical, he can unleash a devastating series of attacks via his Duel limit break.
