Dragged from his home of Zanarkand during a big Blitzball match, Tidus finds himself in an alien environment 1,000 years in the future. With him knowing nothing of this strange new world, he is moreso than any other character the physical embodiment of the player. As he travels around Spira, he learns as we do.
His initial goal is to find some way back to his home, to which Sin holds the key. His lack of worldly knowledge hinders him at all junctions, acting outside the teachings of Yevon and eliciting shock and disgust from many of the people he encounters. Especially Lulu. He finds favour with the delightfully squishy Yuna and joins the pilgrimage in an effort to discover more about the world, but quickly falls for her and takes his place as one of her gurdians.
Having had no formal training when it comes to combat, Tidus isn't one of the best fighters. However, his Blitzball experience keeps him physically fit and agile, and ensures he can always play as part of a team. His traditional journey around the Sphere Grid teaches him support abilities such as Cheer, Haste, and Flee.
