Being coach and captain of one of the worst teams in the history of blitzball, the Besaid Aurochs, can really take it out of you. Their continued failure is why this year is Wakka's last in the game; After this, he's going to be full-time guardian to the young Yuna.
Wakka takes Tidus under his wing in Besaid, hoping that having him on the Aurochs will bring them victory this year. As a strict follower of Yevon, he is quick to drill into Tidus the teachings and taboos so that he doesn't ruin the pilgrimage. Tidus' lack of blind faith, and his heathenistic attitude to the Al Bhed and the holy city of Zanarkand, get in the way somewhat.
Wakka's blitzball skills come in useful in battle, giving him near-flawless accuracy against all but the most evasive of foes. His training also allows him to take part in underwater combat, if need be. He comes into his own as a tactician, using a variety of status ailment-inducing attacks to disable enemies and leave them helpless while the rest of the party lays into the offensive. That's not to say he's weak, though; his attacks are more than capable of dishing out damage, and one of his overdrives allows for a massive 12-hit combo.
