With her black and red get-up, barbed wire necklace, and skull motifs abound, Paine isn't the sort of person you would expect to be seen with Rikku and Yuna. An ex-Crusader, no one is really sure why she joined the Gullwings, but as one of the most focused members of the team she is a more than welcome addition.
Her time in the Crusaders' battle against Sin has had its toll on poor Paine, hardening her shell to the point of obnoxiousness. Her up-close experiences of death have left her cold, and she rarely opens up about her feelings or lets anyone into the secrets of her past. A past which somehow includes the leaders of Spira's new groups, and events no one should have to live with. Serious and methodical, when Paine says that she keeps track of her comrades' "respect points," it's easy to believe she is telling the truth.
Which isn't to say that she is a total outsider. Though she'd rather keep her personal life out of it, she is a dedicated member of the Gullwings and does hold a genuine friendship with them. Her knowledge of all things Spira is of vital help to their pursuit of spheres, and her swordsmanship ever handy against those who would seek to stop them.
Auron would be proud.
