A mercenary known as the Flaming Amarant, hired by Queen Brahne along with Lani to track down Princess Garnet. He takes on the job, however, for his own reasons; Zidane is known to be traveling with the princess, and Amarant's got a score to settle. A dangerous loner, he nevertheless has an honor of his own, refusing to stoop to Lani's hostage-taking tricks. When Zidane defeats him in battle but allows him to live, he cannot understand how such a "spineless wimp" was able to best him. Furthermore, he doesn't comprehend how allowing teammates into one's life can be anything but opening oneself up to weakness. To get an idea of why Zidane's philosophy works, he follows along with the party when invited. He uses claws in battle, and can also throw weapons and certain items. In addition, his Flair command opens up a menu of limited skills. In Trance, Flair changes to Elan, and affects all targets instead of one.

Seeking the Promised Land, they traveled from world to world, until a devastating virus decimated their numbers on the planet in which Final Fantasy VII takes place. To survive, the Ancients had to give up their quest and mingle with the human population. According to one of the Cetra, Ifalna, the "crisis from the sky," or "Jenova," came and infected these peaceful people with a virus which maddened them and eventually either killed them or morphed the Ancients into monsters. The last known survivor of the Cetra was Aeris, daughter of Ifalna. Though Sephiroth claimed to be one because of his link to Jenova, it was later revealed that Jenova was not a Cetra at all, but was the cause of their downfall, as stated above.
