Choco is the one chocobo the party may ride in Final Fantasy IX, met in the Chocobo Forest. Choco can be summoned to the party on any set of chocobo tracks, by using a Gysahl Green. By riding on his back, the party avoids random encounters, and if his abilities have been upgraded, he can be used to cross various types of normally impassable terrain. He begins with the Field ability, and may also gain Reef ability, Mountain ability, Ocean ability, and Sky ability. Choco can also find treasure in various ways. In the Chocobo Forest, Chocobo Lagoon, and Chocobo's Air Garden, Mene the moogle runs a minigame called Chocobo Hot & Cold. Within a limited amount of time, Choco and his rider can attempt to find buried treasure by digging with his beak. If any Chocographs are found, Choco can also attempt to find buried treasure on the world map in the specified locations. He can also use a Dead Pepper to open cracks in mountainsides and dive deep into the ocean.
FFIX NPCA Chocobo who hangs around with Mene the moogle (perhaps as homage to Choco/Mog) and takes a shine to Zidane. By playing Chocobo Hot and Cold, Choco can find treasures all over the world and eventually reach Chocobo Paradise.

General Species
A chocobo is a large rideable bird used to travel quickly without any random encounters with monsters. Though most are flightless and yellow, chocobos occasionally come in different colours and this usually grants them abilities above the standard yellow variety. In the earlier games chocobos were solely a means of transportation, but in later games they can be trained, bred, fought with, and used in various minigames such as racing and hunting for treasure.
FFVII SpeciesChocobos can be caught by equipping the Chocobo Lure materia and running into a random encounter on the chocobo tracks that appear in various places on the world map. When battle is joined with a chocobo present, its attention must be kept with Greens until the other monsters have been slain. When riding on a chocobo on the world map, there are no random battles, but dismounting will let the chocobo run off. Later in the game, chocobo stables can be bought from the Chocobo Farm, and after dismounting a caught chocobo, the option will appear to send it back to the stables. When tamed chocobos are bred, the new chocobo may have special abilities and coloring differing from the normal yellow. Green chocobos can cross mountains, blue chocobos can run on rivers and shallow ocean, and black chocobos can do both of these. Gold chocobos may run on any terrain, including deep ocean water. Tame chocobos may also be raced at the Gold Saucer. To raise a chocobo's racing stats, enter the Chocobo Farm and feed it Greens, which may be bought from Choco Billy or the Chocobo Sage. Different Greens have different effects.
FFIX SpeciesIn Final Fantasy IX, there is only one chocobo the party may ride. His name is Choco, first met in the Chocobo Forest along with Mene the moogle. He can be ridden to avoid random encounters and to find buried treasure. There is a rumor of a Chocobo's Paradise, where chocobos go to live in utopian bliss when they have found all the treasure they can.

FFIX Location
A forest on the Mist Continent in which the chocobo Choco and the moogle Mene live and play. You can play the Chocobo Hot & Cold minigame here, digging up treasures with Choco's beak in a certain time limit, earning points and leveling up his beak. You can keep the treasures as well as exchange points for prizes.
- Chocobo Hot & Cold
-
If you ask Mene in the Chocobo Forest, Chocobo Lagoon, or Chocobo's Air Garden, he'll let you play this minigame and attempt to find buried treasure within a limited time by digging with Choco's beak. Choco will become excited the closer he is to the treasure; his "kweh"s will clue you in on whether you're near or far, thus the "hot & cold" in the name. Various items and amounts of gil may be found this way, along with Chocographs and Chocograph pieces. In addition, points may be earned, which in turn may be traded to Mene for items and equipment. When Choco reaches the higher beak levels, his digging becomes lightning fast, enabling him to find more items within the time limit.
