Final Fantasy

A series of video game RPGs made by the Square corporation. Though the series has progressed from the first Final Fantasy with its simplistic plot and no characterization to the modern deal with involved characters, plot twists, and dozens of hours of gameplay including sidequests, they all share a common theme: lead a group of adventurers, whether they be a motley crew or prophecy-foretold, to save the world in which they live from the ancient evil that threatens it. The games tend to share little besides the name, general theme, and certain traditional included elements; each deals with a different world and characters. As of fall 2003, Final Fantasies I, II, and IV through XI have been released to the English-speaking world, as well as the spin-offs Final Fantasy Mystic Quest, Final Fantasy Tactics, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, and Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles, with plans for more on the way. Final Fantasy X-2 has also been released, the first in the numbered series to continue a storyline from a previous Final Fantasy. (The GameBoy games The Final Fantasy Adventure and Final Fantasy Legend I-III were games in other series renamed for the English releases, presumably to capitalize on the success of the Final Fantasy games.) There have also been two anime series, Final Fantasy: Legend of the Crystals and Final Fantasy: Unlimited, and the CG movie Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within. The seemingly erroneous adjective "Final" came about because the first Final Fantasy was the producer's last chance to produce a video game; if it hadn't done so well, he would have had to quit.

The game which started the whole shebang. The world is in trouble as the four elements have seemingly gone haywire, but the four prophecied Light Warriors have appeared to defeat the demons of earth, fire, water, and air and their master Chaos to restore the world to order. Released for NES and for PlayStation, as part of Final Fantasy Origins (North America and Europe).
