The world on which Final Fantasy VII takes place is known simply as "the Planet." It is a living thing, with a Lifestream of pure energy coursing beneath its surface. The Ancients can commune with the Planet, listening to the cycle of life and death through the Lifestream. The Shinra is rapidly becoming a threat to its existence, as it sucks out the Planet's energy in the form of Mako with Reactors. Long ago, the Planet created a devastating means of defense called WEAPONs, which-- for now-- sleep beneath the surface. Even more powerful a defense is Holy, summoned by praying with the Holy Materia, which, if called upon, may well destroy all threats to the Planet, large and small... including the entire human race.

Earth. There were hints to this in FFVI and earlier, but none of them come to mind right now. Bahamut ZERO and Sephiroth's Super Nova in FFVII show that the action takes place on Earth.

Much of the Shinra-controlled city of Midgar is raised on an enormous "plate." The homes and businesses of those who can afford it, including the Shinra HQ in the very center, are on the top of the plate. The poor live below, in slums. Barret calls the plate a "&^#$# 'pizza'."
