Mission 3: Down in the Bonehoard
...and the manfools piled rock on rocks and raised a treesie roof,
hammers saws tear the skin of goodsie wood...
...and laughs at the Woodsie Lord.
...and when learns the Lord of this, He sends His beastesses to the manfools...
...who attacks and hammers saws their useless fleshes,
and build him a house of they rotting skins.

Set-up
Well, Cutty's not going to be able to give you your pay for the Bafford sceptre. It wasn't all a complete waste of time, however. You've found out the location of the Horn of Quintus, and it just might help pay your rent for the month. It's going to involve sneaking around haunted catacombs, so you'd better stock up on holy water and clean underwear.
Objectives:
- Search the Bonehoard for the Horn of Quintus.
- Steal (Hard) 1000 or (Expert) 2000 worth of loot.
- (Hard/Expert) Find the gemstone, "The Mystic's Soul."
- (Expert) Also find the gemstone, "The Mystic's Heart."
- (Hard/Expert) Escape.
Run-down
If the zombies in Cragscleft gave you the willies, this mission is not for you. You'll be venturing right into a tombfull of undead, and this time they won't be asleep. There are too many to destroy, and you'll have to weigh up your options and conserve your holy arrows. You'll also come across a new enemy, the burrick. These giant subterranean lizards belch toxic gasses and can take a lot of damage before falling.
Walk-through
Maps: Bonehoard, Halls of Echoing Repose.
Part I: The Bonehoard
First off, rise above it all and enter the collapsed tomb to the left of the entrance. There you'll find a measly 15 gold, but it's worth it for the effort required. Enter the Bonehoard. You'll find yourself crawling along the rafters of a very tall room, guarded by a zombie. Continue past and into the next room. Note that the ceiling is made of wood, and that you can use a rope arrow here to descend. Fire it into the ceiling and fall onto the rope that descends from it. If you foul it up, simply lean out and get the arrow back.
Note: Any rope arrows can be retrieved as long as they didn't break on stone. If you are climbing up to an area, try to get your arrow back so that you can use it later. You can take the arrows even while hanging on the rope, but watch you don't plummet to your death.
Take the darkened left exit from this room, and follow the thin corridor around to some stairs. You'll end up above the first room, and in full view of the zombie. Stick to the wall so as not to get caught. Inspect the crack in the wall and you'll notice a chest behind it; open it for some very handy water arrows. Return and climb the other stairs. There's a holy font in the little room off to the side, but no zombies for miles. In the next room is 100 gold and a very poorly concealed arrow trap. Stay off the lowered floor and you'll stay alive. The next room has an undead Hammer, so just nip down the handy rope arrow. To the left is a room with a sleeping zombie. 100 gold is stashed in the chest behind the broken wall, but you'll wake him if you get close enough to open it. Cunning leaning will let you open it from a safe distance, however. Go back to the rope and through to the water. Swim straight through the tunnel and out the other side. The underwater passage to the right just takes you around in a circle, so avoid it. You'll emerge in a room that screams "trap" at you. Every time one of the chests is opened or closed, an arrow will be fired between the two holes. No problem, just open them from the side and reward yourself with a speed potion and a quiver of lovely fire arrows. Head down the ladder, but don't hang around at the bottom as the floor plate causes a boulder to fall from above.
Part II: The burricks
The tunnels ahead contain burricks. One will be patrolling a T-junction. As soon as this one disappears to the right, sprint past and go left. Duck down the adjacent tunnel and hopefully the burrick won't have seen you. Instead of entering the cave, retreat down this tunnel and take the plunge into the water below. There's a small room here with 100 gold, a shedload of fire arrows, and a note from someone after the Mystic's Soul. Handy. The burrick tunnel, thankfully empty, will take you to the caverns.
The caverns are swarming with burricks. Carefully time your descent and then leg it to the darkened corner. The two heavily patrolled tunnels lead to a dead burrick, and are best avoided. Take the other tunnel and you'll come out next to the cavern entrance form before. Sneak along, and you'll notice a rope hanging in front of another tunnel. Run to this and climb up. The burricks may notice you, but what can they do? You'll come out in a large cavern. Make the leap over to the tunnel and you'll find the poor soul mentioned by the other thief. No money, though. The caverns below have two patrolling burricks, and timing is of the essence if you want to take this route. You'll come out slap in the middle of the Halls of Echoing Repose, in a conveniently hidden watery bit.
Part III: The Halls of Echoing Repose
Swim through and pick up the odd golden bone floating in the next section. Continue and you'll pop up through a cracked floor leading to a spiral staircase. There's another golden bone waiting at the top, along with a lot of zombies. Keep your wits about you and you might not get spotted, but you have all that holy water in case you do. The Halls are pretty confusing and your map doesn't help much, so use mine instead (ah, the wonders of Paint). The upper levels are relatively zombie-free, so get up there as soon as you can.
Ground floor, point 3: A darkened room contains 4 resting zombies and a goblet worth 100 loot. There is also another golden bone here, but it's much easier to get to. Unless you're desperate, avoid going for the loot here.
Ground floor, point 4: When you enter this brightly lit room, rocks will fall from the ceiling and the zombie and undead Hammer will awaken. For 100 loot, it's probably not worth the combat.
Ground floor, point 6: Get inside here via the thin corridor from the southeast. It's brightly lit and guarded by a zombie and a Hammer, so you'll have to make with the holy water. On the top layer of sarcophagi there's a 25 loot goblet. Climb the ladders to the first floor.
First floor, point 1: Fireballs are constantly being thrown through this doorway. Time it right and you can use this trap to kill the zombie to the left, too.
First floor, point 2: The Marad crypt appears to be useless, except for the 15 loot it contains.
First floor, point 3: The Hammerite crypt contains a deadly trap in the form of a hammer of light. Keep out of the light and you'll be perfectly safe. 45 loot can be found in here, and if you throw all of the gold bones into the coffin, you'll get holy water, water arrows, and fire arrows. There's also a holy font in here.
First floor, point 4 (Hard/Expert only): This is a very dangerous section that leads to the Mystic's Soul. A flaming Hammerite patrols an octagonal wall, and cannot be defeated. Hitting it with three water arrows will cause it to disappear for a while and give you a fire arrow, so use this to buy time. Use fire arrows on each of the torches and the central trapdoor will open. The surrounding doors will also open, each containing a zombie. Jump down the trapdoor and swim through to the next area. There are loads of arrow, fireball and magical bolt traps in here. Treading on the floorboards around the stairs and even the steps themself will activate them, so duck whilst on the floor and try to leap over the bolts when climbing the stairs. At the top is the Mystic's Soul, worth a cool 500 loot. In true Indiana Jones style, place the nearby skull onto the pedestal before removing the stone. Then leave, preferably quickly.
Top floor, point 1: Leads to a cave of burricks. There's little to worry about, because the sound of the horn is keeping them peaceful. Move on to a tall, octagonal room. Climb the ladders and make some death-defying leaps here (SAVE YOUR GAME) and the Horn of Quintus awaits at the top. Normal mode ends here. Everyone else, head back down to the burrick cave. They are less peaceful now but fortunately still stationary. Sneaking past them isn't too easy, but remember that there's little to be gained from stealth as long as you can outrun them.
Top floor, point 2: A very evil-sounding demon trap will let you get a few extra rope arrows and loot here. Drop down to the floor below, and the rope arrows are hidden in a chest behind a pillar. The demon's eyes are worth 100 loot each, but be careful. Getting too close will result in a volley of fireballs coming from its mouth.
Top floor, point 3 (Expert only): The burrick in the middle of this room can be avoided by just sticking to the circumference. From there, you'll come to a room filled with stone beams and magical bolt traps. Time it right and make your way down to the bottom. Next you're told to avoid the gaze of the statues. The following room is essentially an invisible wall maze, if you stand in the line of sight of a statue, you will die. Weave in and out of the pillars to get through. The final room contains four illuminated statues, but a Haunt will appear in the centre when you approach. Being very careful not to make a sound, sneak around the edge to the chest. Inside is the Mystic's Heart, worth 1000 loot. The oddly-coloured area behind it will teleport you back to the burrick room.
Top floor, point 4: Crawl through this little gap to leave the Bonehoard and end your mission.
