Abstract
With Mayu finally located, the time has come to leave the cursed Kurosawa house. However, it's really not that easy as history begins to catch up with the twins and the spirits are determined to show them what happened to All God's Village. Revelations about sisters Yae and Sae, and the unfortunate visitors to the village, come thick and fast, while Mayu's weakening state allows Sae to gain a foothold in her mind. Quick shutterwork is essential for the many fleeting spirits around the Kurosawa house, while combat is generally reserved for the chapter finale.
Kurosawa, 2F Doll Stand Room
First, examine Mayu's hiding place to find Yae and Sae's Butterfly Diary 1 and accompanying photo of Warped Twins. Examine the doll stand and take a photo to see that they have since been rearranged, though you don't need to and the picture itself is worthless.
There's something familiar about the smell here...
Kurosawa, 2F Flickering Room
Hostile Spirit Alert: Woman in Box
As you enter the room, the unphotographable spirit from before is nowhere to be seen. Take a few more steps, however, and she will materialise but still in a dormant state. She won't rise until you are close enough to touch her, though fortunately she takes long enough to do so that you can idly back away before the fight starts.
Despite not having a box this time, Woman in Box is no different to the encounter a few chapters ago. There's no need to move, and little need to even adjust your aim. The flickering light can provide a distraction, but if you focus your attention on the capture circle you should have no difficulty.
On her inevitable defeat, she drops the Twin Doll Heads for the stand in the other room.
Kurosawa, 2F Doll Stand Room
Prepare for a time-limited version of the classic sliding tile puzzle. On inserting the heads, you have sixty seconds to rearrange the dolls while Mayu mumbles. Don't panic, as it's really quite easy; All you have to do is move the two ornate ones to the stands at the top, and the exact arrangement of them or the remaining dolls doesn't matter. Even if you fail, you can start again without penalty. The Butterfly Key is your prize.
Bound Spirit Alert: Doll Stand Shadow
1000pts
You may not notice her at first, as the filament was glowing at the doll stand before you completed the puzzle. Point your camera around the bottom right hand corner of the stand to find this poor girl.
Kurosawa, 2F Flickering Room
No Spirit Alert: Nothing to see here, move along.
Kurosawa, 2F Guest Room
Spirit Alert: Hanging Hand
Personal best: 2157pts
If you have the Sense function, ignore the shiny baubles for now and bring out the camera as soon as you enter the room. A mysterious and creepy limb at the window. There is no time limit for taking its picture, so line up a good shot but don't get too close.
On the desk lies a new Kurosawa House Map and Folklorist's Note 6 explaining where it came from. This should come in handy for making your escape.
Spirit Alert: No Escape
Personal best: 4427pts
Approach the limb if you can see it, and prepare to meet its owner, previosuly known as Limbo Woman. Look away, then draw out the camera and slowly turn to face the arm. No Escape will suddenly drop down in front of the viewfinder, hanging around for a little while.
Kurosawa, 2F Guest Room Hallway
Spirit Alert: Talking Man
Personal best: 359pts
Finally, one for those without Sense. As you reach the corner of the hall, Kurosawa himself appears near the locked door half way along. Mio will not automatically aim at him, so you will need to be alert with the shutter to capture him before he vanishes.
Kurosawa, Courtyard Staircase
There is a lantern here. An annoyingly tricky ghost is about to appear, so saving would be strongly advised. From the lantern, turn and run as fast as you can down the first flight of stairs.
Spirit Alert: Calling Man
Personal best: 769pts
On reaching the bottom step, Kurosawa appears at the top and calls out to Mio. This is enough to encourage her to turn and look automatically, so you need only worry about activating the camera to take the shot. The major problem is Mayu, as she will be following and so may be standing slap bang in the middle of you and your target. If you ran from the lantern, chances are she is lagging behind far enough for you to get a clear core shot.
Bound Spirit Alert: Garden Woman
1000pts
At the bottom of the stairs, turn to face the small garden to find her waiting among the leaves.
Before leaving, head to the far corner to find a gift from the dragon statue in the form of the Evade Function. This useful piece of kit allows you to flash an attacking spirit in order to avoid damage.
Kurosawa, 1F Great Hall
The Kusabi is gone now, so this room is refreshingly safe. Or seems so, until you start questioning where he went.
As Mio enters, Mayu limps on ahead into the now empty room. She stands silent, head bowed, in the same spot as the bloody kimono girl. Piercing screams and flashes of the massacre make that point clear.
Mayu, what's wrong?
It's... nothing.
Mio, hurry up, let's go... we have to get out of here...
If you have been reading Makimura's notes around the village, head to the room at the back for another visit.
Kurosawa, 1F Storeroom
Spirit Alert: Exhausted Man
Personal best: 1287pts
Approach the wall farthest from the door for Makimura to make another appearance. You really really can't miss him.
He leaves behind his Bloody Ring...
Kurosawa, 1F Dirt-floor Passageway
Hostile Spirit Alert: Limbo Man
Limbo Man is back and stronger than ever. It will take a number of close Zero shots or Fatal Frames to defeat him. That said, he poses no major threat, so it is not necessary to break open the high-power film or even break a sweat. Keep your eye on him at all times, and wait for him to become invulnerable. As he does, he will enter a slow lunge which finishes in a Zero or Fatal. More often than not, he will target Mayu instead, which makes it even easier to aim. Whike this will pose Mayu some distress, try not to let her screams bother you as you have opportunity to hit him before he actually makes contact.
Take the customary Spirit Orb after the battle. If things are starting to seem tough, take note of exactly where you fell over in that fight (aim, shot power, etc) and upgrade the camera appropriately.
Kurosawa, 1F Antechamber
Mayu's babbling is beginning to turn serious, so it is vital that we get her out of the house as soon as possible.
Kurosawa, 1F Entrance
Spirit Alert: Curtain Shadow
Personal best: 1023pts
Take a few steps towards the exit and the camera angle will flicker. This is your cue to open the viewfinder and point at the door. A pair of disembodied legs will soon walk by the hanging curtain. The filament will not react to this, so use your initiative and shoot the core before it fades.
So close... Approach the exit to find that the door is held shut, and is covered in bloody handprints...
Spirit Alert: Behind Cloth
Personal best: 699pts
Kuroasawa appears again immediately after examining the door. The aim is automatic and perfect, so only Mayu's tendency to hog the camera could prevent you from a stealing prize-winning snapshot.
With the exit barred, there is no choice but to venture into the east wing of the house using your new butterfly key.
Kurosawa, 1F Storage Room
Spirit Alert: Child at Door
Personal best: 659pts
Bring out the viewfinder and carefully approach the door, looking at it from the right. Once you are close enough, he'll tentatively open it and peek through at you. There is plenty of time to capture a good shot.
Take the Herbal Medicine from the nearby chest and, ignoring the child, turn to the stairs instead for some bonuses.
Kurosawa, 2F Partition Screen Room
Spirit Alert: Peeking Child
Shortly after the camera angle changes to show the far wall, you pass by the hole in the floor. Peeking Child appears at this point, crouched on the floor looking into it. Aim is automatic.
You can't reach the tempting item he was looking at, but you can find Type-14 Film in the box nearby.
Kurosawa, 2F Master's Room
Here you can pick up Ceremony Master's Note 2 and a set of Tomes to discover more about the ritual, and also remove the board blocking the door to the guest room hallway. Now may be a good time to take a small detour to the nearby save lantern, too.
With that done, head back down to the storage room.
Kurosawa, 1F Storage Room
As Mio reaches the bottom step, a Crimson Ball unexpectedly falls from above.
I think something fell...
Dropping it through the hole upstairs dislodges the Diamond Link Key.
Kurosawa, 1F Cloth Hallway
Take the Type-14 Film and prepare yourself for the snappiest ghost you will have encountered yet.
Spirit Alert
Just one or two steps away from the film, this fleeing spirit makes a fleeting appearance. If he reaches the first dangling cloth, which he does after about half a second, then you have missed him. Good luck.
Didn't catch him? Thought so. Follow him to the massive set of double doors, sadly sealed for now, and draw out the viewfinder for yet another, even harder spirit.
Spirit Alert
I can offer no advice here, other than to announce a spirit alert.
Use your diamond link key to leave this unpleasant place.
Kurosawa, 1F Warehouse
Spirit Alert: Warehouse Checker
Personal best: 402pts
Another spirit alert, but this one shouldn't pose a problem. After entering the room, wait a second and the ghost of Makabe will appear, heading towards the cell to Mio's right.
Kurosawa, 1F Cell
Spirit Alert: Captive Man
Personal best: 879pts
Immediately on passing through the doorway, Makabe appears again on the other side of the bars. Aim is automatic and faultless, so enjoy the relaxed pace after the cloth hallway debacle.
A ritual to sacrifice outsiders... could it be?...
Folklorist's Note 8 in the corner of the room hints at poor Makabe's involvement. The cell itself is sealed by not one, but two locks, so you will have to turn back for now. With all these locked doors about, anyone would think we were coming back here later.
Kurosawa, 1F Warehouse Hallway
The little alcove to the right has some delicious Type-61 Film, but you should leave the area after taking it in order to capture this next spirit.
Spirit Alert: Clinging Shadow
Personal best: 1259pts
If Mayu is near the alcove while Mio is at the far end of the hallway, this malicious ghost will grab hold of her and refuse to let go. That is, until you capture him. It may take a few runs for him to appear, so keep at it.
When you are ready, head along the corridor and down the stairs.
Below Kurosawa, Underground Cellar
Large room? Nearby lantern? Limbo Man a distant memory? That must mean...
Hostile Spirit Alert: Veiled Priest
The veiled priest is not tough, but given Limbo Man and Woman in Box, is the strongest yet in this chapter. He can teleport, which he does rarely and only after standing still for a long time. Another of his tricks is to quickly circle-strafe through a right angle or more, followed by a shutter chance or Fatal Frame, so be prepared to chase him if he does. His ranged attack is weak and may be stopped by taking his picture, so keeping him on camera at all times is a must. Besides these points, he is a slow and relatively weak spirit who shouldn't provide much difficulty and probably won't even hit you.
Take his Spirit Orb and save, then head to the exit... only to find that it too is locked. You have no choice bur to turn back and head to...
Kurosawa, 1F Cloth Hallway
After reaching the dogleg bend in the hall, you will see another spirit of Kurosawa.
Spirit Alert: Ritual Pusher
Personal best: 229pts
Don't let my score put you off; he's really quite easy. As you're already looking at the door when he appears in front of it, you should have no difficulty capturing him.
Kurosawa heads through the door, which is now unlocked and inviting.
Kurosawa, 1F Family Altar Room
Hostile Spirit Alert: Veiled Priest
Another veiled priest makes his presence known a moment after entering the room. The improved lighting makes him easier to keep track of, though the slightly smaller room means he may end up protected behind the scenery more often. Take advantage of his speed, and maybe of Mayu too, to finish him off without hassle.
Ceremony Master's Note 1, on the Malice and the extent of the disaster, sits at the altar. To either side, part way along little corridors, are Note 4 and some Herbal Medicine. Finally, the priest left behind the usual Spirit Orb and a Glowing Red Crystal for the radio. Both of the stairways leading down head to the same place, so choose one and follow it. The western path has Sacred Water, in case that should influence your decision.
Kurosawa, Connecting Corridor
The corridor leads outside, to a small twin pathway separated by a line of trees. These both lead towards an ominously large tower secreted behind the house. At the end of each path is a pressure pad. Step on them in turn and the twins will come up with the idea of splitting up to press them simultaneously.
Mio, didn't we promise? Together always...
Kurosawa, 1F Lattice Room
Spirit Alert: Waiting Priest
Personal best: 879pts
A veiled priest awaits in this room, but he is pleasantly docile. There is plenty of time to take the picture, especially as he stands patiently directly in front of Mio.
With the priest captured, you can take the Shadow Key (one down) and save at the convenient lantern.
Kurosawa, 1F Rope Temple
The next room, which you should recognise and fear in appropriate quantities, is nevertheless perfectly safe. Ceremony Master's Note 5 lies on the altar, hinting at just what went wrong here. There is nothing else to do besides sightseeing, so head all the way back to the family altar room and up the stairs you find there. The journey should be uneventful enough.
Kurosawa, 2F Meditation Room
More of the twins' notes may be found here in the form of Butterfly Diary 3, and there's a nice See Lens overlooking the altar room. This is useless for now, but may prove invaluable should you find yourself having to squint to see tricky spirits. Encourage Mayu to step on the pad in the corner of the room, and a little doorway opens to view the Master's Room.
Kurosawa, 2F Master's Room
The missing section, Butterfly Diary 2, lies on the floor in this cramped little space, but that is not entirely why you are here.
Spirit Alert: Speaking Man
Personal best: 547pts
Speaking Man may take a few attempts to get right. He appears just to the side of the lattice separating Mio from the room proper, so you have the wooden frame between you and the core. As he moves slightly while talking, the core can rapidly flicker in and out of view. You will need to run forwards before drawing the camera, reducing the amount of time you have to take the shot. That said, he waits for some time, so it's not impossible.
I'll hold on to this key so that escape is impossible...
Important: Do not leave until you hear the scrape of a hatchway opening.
The route to the Master's Room is now to the west on the first floor, and up through the partition screen room.
Kurosawa, 2F Partition Screen Room
Mayu senses someone nearby, and their presence is even felt by Mio as she approaches the door.
The Mourners are causing a fuss... They must be afraid of the trembling of that place...
Kurosawa, 2F Master's Room
Hostile Spirit Alert: Veiled Priest
Immediately on entering, the priest appears right before Mio. This is a good chance to get the first hit in, and weakening him whenever possible is essential in a tiny room like this. His strafe move is enough to send him clear around the central pillar, so be on your guard.
He leaves behind the usual Spirit Orb on defeat. The Buddha statue holds the key mentioned before, but you will need to use the Tomes in the right order to take it. Each book has a highlighted word, and the statue itself has a passage with five highlighted parts. Arrange the books in the order in which their words appear.
Arranging them in order (Crimson Wing, Taboo, Twin, Disaster, Ritual) reveals the Light Key. Save nearby if you want to, then head for the cell.
Kurosawa, 2F Partition Screen Room
Hostile Spirit Alert: Man in Dark
Yes, Man in Dark. As weak as ever, his only real punch here is down to the cramped conditions and his very sudden appearance.
Kurosawa, 1F Cloth Hallway
Hostile Spirit Alert: Man in Dark
This Man in Dark waits patiently at the end of the hall, protected by the cloth which means you'll have to walk right up to him before you can snap him. Once awoken, you can happily retreat to a safe distance and let him come to you to be finished off.
Kurosawa, 1F Cell
Very powerful Type-90 Film lies before the Buddha statues on entering the cell. Examine the surroundings for the highly illuminating Folklorist's Note 9 and 10, an Osaka House map, and the important Hammer Key. Also note the desk with the unreadable red-stained paper and small doll. Leave here to finish the chapter.
Come on, let's get out of here.
As Mio leaves the room, the cell door slams shut to leave Mayu trapped.
Mayu!
Mio tries the door, but it is sealed tight. She steps away, looking for any signs to indicate how it may be unlocked.
No! Don't go! Stay with me!
Mayu begins to panic, growing increasingly desperate at her sister's attempts to leave for help.
You just promised! Don't leave me! Please... don't leave me...
Mayu's words echo in Mio's mind, as she relives the accident in the woods. Mayu, now sobbing on the floor, pleads to her sister once more.
Don't leave me any more...
But Mio has no choice. She makes to leave, promising to return at soon as possible. As she turns her back, she hears Sae's malevolent voice coming from the cell.
Dear sister... Are you leaving me again?
